Laundry Room & Mudroom Cabinet Painting in Lincoln

Laundry and mudroom cabinets take more abuse than kitchen cabinets and almost always get a cheaper original finish. Laundry cabinets deal with detergent spills, bleach splash and dryer heat cycling the cabinet above the machine every single day. Mudroom lockers take boots, road salt and knee-height impact for five months of the year, a genuinely Nebraska-specific problem that a coating spec written for a mild climate does not account for.

We spec accordingly. Laundry gets a coating with real chemical resistance. Mudrooms get the hardest film we spray plus extra build on the lower rails and locker bases where the actual damage happens.

The Rooms People Forget to Quote

Almost every customer who bundles built-ins into a kitchen project tells us afterwards that they nearly did not. The usual pattern is that they think of the kitchen as the project and everything else as separate, then finish the kitchen and immediately notice the contrast.

  • The laundry room, especially when it opens directly off the kitchen
  • Mudroom lockers and bench cabinets at the garage entry
  • A desk nook or built-in office that shares a wall with the kitchen
  • Bookcases flanking a fireplace, which read as kitchen-adjacent in open-plan homes
  • The basement bar, which was almost certainly installed the same year as the kitchen
  • A butler's pantry or bar cabinet between the kitchen and dining room

Adding any of these to the kitchen quote costs a fraction of what the same work costs standalone, because mobilisation, masking, colour mixing and shop setup are already paid for. The same logic applies to the bathroom vanities.

Office Built-Ins, Bookcases & Basement Bars

Office built-ins and bookcases are the low-wear end of what we do and the most purely aesthetic. Nothing spills on a bookcase. That changes the priority: the coating does not need to be armour, it needs to look flawless, because these units are usually at eye level in a well-lit room where people sit and look at them.

This is also where colour gets interesting. Kitchens tend towards safe. Offices and libraries are where Lincoln homeowners choose deep greens, navies and near-blacks, and where those colours look best, because the room is small enough to carry them and the joinery is often the only feature in it.

Basement bars are the opposite case and need real care. Below-grade rooms hold higher humidity year-round, and a bar cabinet has standing water risk at the sink plus alcohol and citrus acid on the counter. We spec those closer to a bathroom vanity than to a bookcase.

Matching a Finish You Already Have

Most built-in work is a match rather than a fresh start, either to a kitchen we have just painted, or to woodwork you are keeping.

Matching our own recent work is straightforward, since we hold the formula and the sheen on file. Matching someone else's existing finish is harder and worth being realistic about. Colour is the easy half; sheen is what actually gives a mismatch away. A satin bookcase beside a semi-gloss kitchen reads as wrong even when the colour is a perfect match, because the two surfaces reflect light differently.

We sample on a hidden area, check it in the room's own light at two different times of day, and only then commit. If the existing finish has ambered with age, which anything more than about eight years old will have, we match the aged colour rather than the original, because that is what your eye compares against.

Where a built-in is original stained woodwork rather than paint, refinishing it rather than painting is frequently the better answer, particularly in Lincoln's older homes.

Built-In Painting FAQs

Can you paint built-ins without doing my kitchen?

Yes. Standalone built-in work is a job we take happily: a pair of bookcases, a home office wall or a laundry room on its own. It costs more per cabinet than the same work bundled with a kitchen, because the setup is the same either way, but it is still a fraction of replacement.

Will the paint hold up to boots and road salt in a mudroom?

With the right coating, yes. Mudrooms get the hardest film we spray, with extra build on the lower rails, locker bases and bench fronts where impact and salt actually land.
